Issues & Trends

www.bsigroup.com

Here I found some interesting trends and issues within the fashion industry  from the website above. Mainly concentrating on the ethica side of fashion, as this is one of the major issues that faces the fashion industry, and which will unfortunatelty be a while until it is altered.

MAKE-UP

Below are some images of some of the make-up used for the Annie Greenabelle shoot, I decided to choose a light smokey eye for the make up for my models as I felt this complimented the outfits well. Nothing too heavy. The colour palette for the clothing is- Navy Blue, White and Silver, (with a splash of pale pink in one garment), so a smokey eye felt well suited. The smokey eye can be worn during the day or night, and is easy to apply, yet gives the eyes great exaggeration.

All images above are from the body shop website.
Most make up used was from Body Shop- sticking to the Ethical lines of my project (it would feel wrong using anything otherwise!), my make up artist was my sister and she did an amazing job of capturing the feel I was looking for. Unfortunately I did not manage to get a close up of this make up, but it is clear in some of my images! But the first model had grey/silver with a white highlight smokey eye, and the other model wearing the clown frill dress had a light pink going into grey with some splashes of white. They looked amazing, Note to self: Remember close ups.
Below are some inspirational make-up images:

Here are three images that are my favourite from the 10 I have been sent so far from the Photographer Bryony Sly. Unfortunately, when we did the shoot yesterday the weather was awful, (typically) it was cold, wet and windy! But we did this didn't stop us, the models Becky Hatwell and Lucy Evans did an amazing job fighting the cold, as well as the photographer, plus myself the stylist and my sister the make-up artist stayed out for a good few hours. I feel with these images you cannot tell that the weather is that bad, which is great as I want my magazine spread to be aimed for S/S10 and I was worried that the shoot would not be able to pull of this season, but it has!
Hopefully out of the selection there will be a few more that I can consider to use within my magazine spread!, I am deffinetely going to do another shoot with different Ethical clothing when the weather is better, and with some different models, to add more variety within the magazine.
Will add more once they have come through and been edited.
Photo Inspirations

I have added some images that I find inspirational for my Annie Greenabelle shoot, or for another shoot (as I plan to do two now, one during the real summer times with different outfits to the ones I've already bought to add variety within my magazine!)

These images are taken by Tim Melideo and I found them from a Wedding Blog (click on link to go to the site). I find these images adorable. I love the light hazeyness of the images that make them look vintage. I liked the way the images are shot on the beach under the pier, and is something that I am hoping to do on my shoot (hopefully the weather won't be too bad). Although these shots are for a couple, I like the posing, and the way the photos look comfortable and relaxed.

The 8 images above I found online from Wallis Photo (click on link to go to website). Again I admired the lighting on these images, I really like how bright and summery they are, it helps to make the models and clothing stand out and become the main focus of the pictures, which is what the aim is when doing a fashion shoot. I also admired the poses of the models as within these spreads are a huge range of diferent poses to reference and take some tips from when doing my own shoot. These images are ultra feminine and sexy but not over the top, they are subtle but easily create a lovely laid back and every day mood.

Styling Ideas

I have already bought the two garments above from the Annie Greenabelle range at Topshop. The are both fairtrade and ethical.  I have not yet chosen what to style these outfits with and the shoot is on Monday (two days away). I have had many ideas of what to put with the garments, but have not yet finalised any of these thoughts.
The above images I have collated was made on Polyvore. The first set: I thought that over the knee grey/dark navy socks would look cute with this Annie Greenabelle clown dress. The knee socks are much lighter weight than heavyweight leggings, I want to make this photo shoot for spring/summer so need am imagining this outfit to be worn during warmer weather. The frills around the neckline of the clown dress in this image appear to be a cream colour (which when I purchased online I thought was cream too) which in actual fact is a light pink/baby pink colour, so that is why I have chosen some high heeled shoes in this colour palette. I think high heels will look better and elongate the legs of the models within the photo shoot. As well as this I am hoping to buy an organic bag which can be used as a beach bag to accesorize the outfit.

For the second set, I was thinking this lovely babydoll dress paired with some white light denier tights would help to compliment the garment, alongside some high heeled either boot type shoes, or some strappy clogs/wedges. I may also put this outfit with a bag too, or with another accessory to make it a bit more playful and appealing to the age group desired.  I don't want lots of jewelery or make up on either of the models as I feel this may detract from the garment pieces I am concentrating on.

 Image above if from:

For the hair and make up I am hoping to have a more natural feel to the shoot, I want the hair down and wavy with volume, and for the make up I think a light smoky eye to enhance the eyes along with natural skin tone and natural lips. As I have said before I do not want to detract too much from the focus of the photo which will in the end be the garments. (Hopefully).
ETHICS & FASHION

“If you describe something as ethical, you mean that it is morally right or morally acceptable.” Collins English Dictionary

"Ethical fashion can be defined as the production of textiles items with a conscience. With the concept of social responsibility gaining ground, corporates all over the world are recognizing the importance of environment protection and ethical business. Fashion houses are no exception, More and more fashion designers and textile producers are striving to produce goods that do not harm the environment and are cruelty-free. Ethical issues in fashion are emerging."
The concept of ethical fashion is not a new one, however in modern times it is gaining more and more popularity, with more people caring and becoming conscious of it. As awareness about environment conservation, cruelty to animals and ethical issues in business is rising, fashion brands are also adopting ethical ways and means. Customers are also becoming increasingly knowledgeable about ethical fashion and are demanding for ethically produced fashion.

Animal and human rights activists as well as environment protection activists have brought up ethical issues related to the fashion industry many times. Some of the major ethical issues that have come up are:
(Information found from
http://www.fibre2fashion.com/industry-article/3/280/ethical-issues-in-fashion3.asp)
  • The production of cotton includes the use of large amounts of pesticides, which is harmful to the environment and to people.
  • The chemical dyes that are used in the production of garments can lead to skin problems. These irritations have been noted among people on account of dangerous toxins in the clothes worn by them.
  • The cruelty to animals behind the preparation of a fur coat has been brought to light time and again by animal rights activists. "One fur coat costs the life of about 55 wild mink, 40 sables, 11 lynx, 18 red foxes, 11 silver foxes, 100 chinchillas, 30 rabbits, 9 beavers, 30 muskrats, 15 bobcats, 25 skunks, 14 otters, 125 ermines, 30 possums, 100 squirrels or 27 raccoons." The pain caused to these animals while trapping them and extracting their fur is unimaginable and disgusting, and is something I personally am totally against.
  • "Human rights activists have also pointed out the various ethical issues behind the preparation of a fashion product. Extremely low wages and long hours, unhealthy and unsafe working conditions, exhaustion, sexual harassment and mental stress are some of these issues. "
None of these are fair or acceptable, but fashion brands are embracing and turning to ethical fashion slowly but surely. "It has been widely accepted in certain countries, while it is still an emerging one in several others". Ethical fashion can be adopted by using eco-friendly, natural and cruelty-free materials. It also includes providing humane working conditions and fair wages to the workers.

FAIR TRADE IN FASHION

Fair trade is a unique business model that was put into place more than 40 years ago to create a "sustainable economy for disadvantaged communities in areas that don't have access to the marketplace. Fair-trade indicates a trading partnership puts consumers in touch with the manufacturers, where the supply chain is transparent and often certified by a third-party such as
The International Fair Trade Association."
A fair-trade label also ensures that the workers receive long-term trading agreements, living wages, fair working conditions and often, reinvestment back in their community through education and other facilities.

"Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their lot and have more control over their lives." (Definition by the Fairtrade Foundation)

People Tree is a label that has really helped people to understand and know more about Fair Trade Fashion. It is one of the oldest and most respected fair-trade fashion design companies.

The information and images can be found on the people tree website.
"A simple idea
For every beautiful garment People Tree makes, there's an equally beautiful change is happening somewhere in the world.
We like to think of it in terms of our little shoots-and-roots motif. We provide you with exclusive fashion - the shoots - while at the same time we work deep down through the roots, improving the lives and environment of the artisans and farmers in developing countries who work to produce it. It's Fair Trade throughout. Simple.

How it works

In order to ensure People Tree fashion meets the Fair Trade principles set out by WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation), we work closely with 50 Fair Trade groups in 15 countries. That way, we can bring benefits to people and the planet at as many steps of the production process as possible – growing cotton, weaving, dyeing, embroidery, stitching etc. – helping alleviate poverty in the world's most marginalised communities.
We also work hard to ensure that we pioneer ecologically sound methods of production and minimise environmental impact. Not only is most of our cotton certified organic and Fairtrade, all our clothes are dyed using safe and natural dyes. And we source as many products as we can locally, choosing natural and recycled products over toxic, synthetic and non-biodegradable materials.
All our designers – both in the UK and Japan – know how to work within this set-up, which means we can produce garments that are beautiful, as well as caring. So, our collections are all the more special because they make imaginative use of local skills (handwoven fabrics, hand screen printing and hand embroidery are used a great deal), which creates as much employment as possible in areas that really need it."

Emma Watson
for
People Tree

Emma Watson has recently collaborated with People Tree to launch a new brand that is aimed for the younger generation to help promote Ethical values when it comes to fashion. Below I have added some pictures and comments that have been written on the People Tree website, from Emma and from the team. The photographs I have added are part of the new catalogue for her range, they are really summery, fresh, happy, young and very British!. I think its a fantastic way to promote ethics to younger people, yes the prices are steeper, but its worth it.

SHOP:

Topshop

Topshop too have a Fairtrade range, concentrating on Fairtrade Cotton.
Annie Greenabelle is an ethical womens clothing brand that Topshop sell on their website. They have some lovely pieces, that are not too expensive for what they are, and what they are doing to help others! They are young pieces, and they have some new fresh pieces for spring/summer 2010.
The pictures above x3 are from the Annie Greenabelle website- http://www.anniegreenabelle.com/

I decided that this brand was best suited to my magazine as they seem young and I am trying to aim my magazine to 15-20 year olds. I bought two items from Topshop for my photoshoot (As we have to get this done as soon as we get back from Easter holidays to hand to the Media Students). I have organised my shoot to be for Monday the 22nd of March and have got two models sorted!.. The items I bought are:

I felt that both of these dresses worked together well, and are in keeping with spring/summer trends with the nautical stripes. They are pieces that I can imagine a younger crowd wanting and wearing as well as older teenages and young women. I have not yet decided what I will style them with and will post this at a later date once thought about better! I am hoping to do the photoshoot on the beach (fingers crossed it will be sunny), so that this will reflect the spring/summer feel. I want happy yet stylish poses from the models, I want it to feel appealing to my age group but nothing too serious.
